Aural Recognition

Learning piano develops the students’ aural skills, that is listening skills. Students learn how to distinguish between different rhythms and sounds while learning piano. Clapping exercises are included in exams and are used to learn different rhythms easily. Students learn how to listen to unheard music and recognise keys, dynamics and rhythms in the music. This is a valuable skill to carry on in life and is part of piano lessons. Building up awareness of melody, form and rhythm develops aural skills and opens possibilities for more advanced work.
